How the district is run
A quick map of the administrative units, healthcare network and contact points that keep Dhemaji running day to day.
Administrative structure
Dhemaji district is led by a District Commissioner (an IAS officer) based at Dhemaji town, with a Co-District Commissioner heading the Jonai co-district. Below that sit four revenue circles — Dhemaji, Jonai, Sissiborgaon and Gogamukh — each headed by a Circle Officer, and five development blocks responsible for rural development work: Dhemaji, Murkongselek, Sissiborgaon, Bordoloni and Machkhowa (with a newer Simen-Sissitongani block carved out under Jonai in 2023).
Below the blocks, local government runs through roughly 65 Gaon Panchayats covering well over a thousand revenue villages and a handful of small towns — Dhemaji, Silapathar, Jonai and Gogamukh among the more developed ones, with Silapathar generally considered the district's commercial hub.
Political representation
Following the 2023 delimitation exercise, Dhemaji district now has three seats in the Assam Legislative Assembly: Dhemaji and Jonai, both reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates, and the newly created Sissiborgaon constituency, which is unreserved (general). All three fall within the Lakhimpur seat at the Lok Sabha (national parliament) level.
Following the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly election, the three seats are held by Dr. Ranoj Pegu (Dhemaji), Bhubon Pegu (Jonai) and Jiban Gogoi (Sissiborgaon), all of the Bharatiya Janata Party. As with officer postings, please verify current MLAs with an official source before relying on this for anything formal.
Healthcare network
Public healthcare runs on a tiered system: one district civil hospital at Dhemaji town handling referral-level care, four Community Health Centres at Bengenagarah, Gogamukh, Jonai and Silapathar for secondary care, around 22 Primary Health Centres spread across the blocks, and roughly 98 sub-centres providing the most basic, village-level services such as antenatal check-ups and immunisation.
